World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same day, led to the creation of UNEP.

Some information on what schools in other countries are doing:
AUSTRALIA Adelaide Centro Colonnades Shopping Centre and Zero Waste South Australia are currently conducting the We're Parting with Plastic project, to highlight the need for the community to look at alternatives to using plastic shopping bags. Local schools are invited to participate in the Centre's World Environment Day celebrations on Thursday 2 June, between 10am and 8pm. There are activities and displays being set up for school visits and hosted by the Museum, Energy SA, SA Water, Keep South Australia Beautiful and the Onkaparinga Catchment Water Management Board. Schools are also invited to be part of the Swap 10 used plastic shopping bags for a FREE bag of organic Cottage Mulch, which is generated from the Centre's Biobin organic composting system.

What do all of you think of using paper bags instead of plastic bag??? Disadvantage is that it is most likely to burst due to heavy weight.

I think Singapore should also use paper bags instead of plastic bag. AUSTRALIA, Adelaide can do it why can't we? I believe we have the abilities to do so, so i hope that Singapore's markets can use paper bags. I agree. Since plastic bag are biodegradable, we should use paper bags instead which we can recycle. Don't you agree?

tickleart@citylink is celebrating WED with a series of art installations at CityLink Mall in Singapore. From June to end July 2005, three window showcases will hold art works from various artists, and Very Special Arts (a non-profit org) that contribute to raising awareness of the world environment. Shirley Soh, artist, has installed her work entitled "the writing's on the soil", comprising objects sculpted from dried compost.

change your font colour!!! we can't read it Az!! Anyways, stitch is Syawal...he has to change his name. To yuan guang: I definitely agree on the paper bag issue...I mean, it's better to use paper as plastic is non-biodegradable, and it can harm our environment... I've seen a lot of other countries(America...Europe etc.) using paper bags, so I think it's best to try out this method. who knows, it might get a good response from the public.
